MENGAPA PERLU BELAJAR ‘MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS’?

Dia sering mengingatkan pelajar-pelajarnya supaya aktif bertanya sekiranya tidak memahami aspek-aspek tertentu ketika syarahan. Daripada segi ini dia tidak menghadapai masalah, malah dia merasa teruja berbincang, berbahas dan menjawab soalan pelajar-pelajar yang kebanyakannya mempunyai pengalaman bekerja.
“Datuk, I am a civil servant. I wonder how the economic principles that you’ve just discussed, such as the use of marginal revenue, marginal cost and the equilibrium point are relevant in my workplace?” tanya Lee Sook Kuan, Pegawai Kanan PTD, Kementerian Kesihatan.
“Datuk, as a Manager, I don’t think I need detailed knowledge regarding economic theories and principles that you’ve taught in this class. All the ground works in my office are not done by me but my subordinate officers!” kata Lim Boon Hock yang bertugas di syarikat swasta.
“Datuk! I am working with Cesta Beverage Sdn Bhd, a company producing various non-alchoholic beverages ready-to-drink. I find this course is very useful and many of the economic principles that you’ve taught in this class are not really being practiced in the company. Surely, I’ll tell my boss of what I’ve learned in this class and to improve our way of doing business!” kata Farah Wahidah Mohd. Pozi.
Begitulah setiap hari Isnin, dia mengendalikan kuliah 3 jam di sebelah pagi kepada 39 orang pelajar yang mengikuti kursus sepenuh-masa, dan 3 jam di sebelah petang dengan jumlah pelajar yang hampir sama bagi mereka yang mengambil kursus separuh-masa.
BERINTERAKSI DENGAN PELAJAR
Sebagai pensyarah kontrak, dia tidak mempuyai pejabat di kampus tetapi dia beroperasi dari rumah dan berkomunikasi dengan pelajar-pelajar melalui e-mail, WhatsApp dan SMS.
Ketika waktu rehat, dia biasanya akan berada di ‘student lounge’ atau di kefeteria untuk memberi ruang kepada pelajar-pelajar yang ingin menemuinya, berbincang atau berborak dengan mereka.
“Datuk! I really should thanks to you!” kata Lee Sook Kuan, ketika dia sedang minum Kopi Tongkat Ali di kefetaria bersama beberapa pelajar lain.
“Last week I attended a meeting in my office, listening the presentation of reports done by 2 consultants. I was not impressed with the study done by the local consultant. But, I really impressed with the analysis and the presentation done by a group of consultants from Harvard University,” kata Lee Sook Kuan, sambil mengambil tempat duduk di hadapannya.
“You know Datuk! The method and the multiple regression analysis they used in the study is exactly the same like you taught us in the class!” kata Lee Sook Kuan yang sebelum ini merasa ragu tentang kesesuaian kandungan kursus ‘Managerial Economics’ untuk diaplikasi dalam persekitaran kerja di sektor awam.
Dia tersenyum dan sambil memusing-musing cawan kertas yang masih berisi air Kopi Tongkat Ali, dia menyahut. “In that case, next time your office shouldn’t engage with the consultant from Harvard University! Its expensive! Get the consultant from Putra Business School!” katanya dengan ketawa, diikuti dengan tawa pelajar-pelajar lain di kelilingnya.
