WORK EXPERIENCE DR MUZAHET MASRURI



Datuk Dr Muzahet Masruri carries over 34 years of working experience with the Government of Malaysia. He held various senior positions, including the Secretary General in the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts & Heritage. He served as the Deputy Director General of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), the Central Government Agency where he was instrumental in formulating the Five-Year Malaysia Development Plans. He was the Deputy Secretary General in the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs and involved in a series of bilateral trade negotiations in 2006 between Malaysia and the USA and trade agreement with Chile. 

He served the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad during the ‘Asian Financial Crisis in 1997/98’. Among the key strategic areas that he was involved in include, the preparation of strategic policies to avert the negative impacts of the Crisis on the Malaysian economy, in which Malaysia took the position against the wisdom of economic theory and conventional doctrine, by creating its own mold in managing the economic crisis. Although actions taken by NEAC received various negative reactions from many, the measures managed to salvage the economy and received the world’s recognition upon success.

After his retirement from the public sector in 2009, he joined the corporate sector as the Executive Director of Strategic Resource & Public Relations Division, Puncak Niaga Sdn Berhad (PNSB) for 4 years. PNSB is an integrated water, wastewater and environmental solutions provider which focused on the distribution of clean water to the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and the State of Selangor.

Upon retiring from the corporate sector in 2013, he joined Putra Business School as the Economics Lecturer for MBA Programme for another 4 years. His vast working experience in the public and private sectors was very valuable in enabling him to contribute better understanding between economic theory and its application in actual business and planning environment with the MBA students.

He fully retired in 2017, and since then he is active in writing on current economic issues in his blog, Azzadmuzahet.com.

Holds a Doctorate in Economics and Masters in Development Economics, both from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. Obtained Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Malaya.
